IT Support in Bath

Managed IT support for Bath businesses from our Cardiff team, about an hour and a quarter away: remote support day to day, onsite visits when they’re needed, and one fixed monthly fee from £40 per user + VAT.

Bath

Remote-first IT support for Bath

Alphabyte IT looks after the IT for Bath businesses from east Cardiff, 53 miles and roughly an hour and a quarter away. Nearly everything, from a locked account to a laptop that won’t print, is sorted over the phone or in a remote session, and an engineer travels to Bath for the jobs that can’t be done any other way.

We don’t have a Bath office, and we won’t pretend otherwise. What you do get is the same handful of people every time you call, proactive monitoring, daily backups our team checks, and security kept to the Cyber Essentials standard, for a fixed monthly fee from £40 per user + VAT.

Because we’re further away than a local firm, we plan onsite work. Installing new equipment, network changes and moves are booked in advance, and we group jobs so one visit covers several. Urgent problems are still typically picked up straight away, because that part doesn’t depend on the drive.

Digital and creative firms

Apps everywhere, accounts under control

Bath & North East Somerset Council describes Bath Quays, its flagship regeneration project, as a key part of Bath’s Enterprise Zone and a hub for digital, technology and creative firms, with the new No.1 Bath Quays office building and the refurbished, listed Newark Works.

Teams in those fields often sign up to a lot of online tools: design and project apps, file sharing, AI tools, and the free trial nobody cancelled. That’s fine until someone leaves with access to half of them, or a customer asks for Cyber Essentials.

Under the current Cyber Essentials requirements, cloud services can’t be left out of scope, sign-in to cloud services must always use multi-factor authentication, and staff’s own phones and laptops are in scope if they’re used to access work data. More on how we protect accounts is on our Microsoft 365 security page.

What we do about it

Five steps to a tidy app estate

  1. List. We find the cloud services your team actually uses, including the ones signed up to with a work email address.
  2. Secure. Multi-factor authentication goes on every one, and anything that can’t support it gets replaced.
  3. Connect. Where an app allows it, staff sign in with their Microsoft 365 account, so a leaver loses access to everything at once.
  4. Agree. Simple rules for personal phones and laptops that open work email and files.
  5. Separate. Admin accounts kept apart from everyday ones, so one phishing email can’t hand over the keys.

Do that alongside the rest of our managed service, and Cyber Essentials becomes mostly paperwork. Our preparation starts from £295 + VAT, with the IASME assessment fee charged separately, and we also help businesses get Cyber Essentials Plus.

Period buildings

Networks where you can’t just drill

Visit Bath puts the number of listed buildings in the city at around 5,000, so your office may well be in one. Under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990, alterations that would affect a listed building’s character need consent, so new cable runs, wall-mounted equipment and comms cabinets need thinking through before anyone picks up a drill.

We plan networks for buildings like these around what’s already there: existing cable routes reused where possible, wireless access points positioned to cover several rooms, and as few new fixings as we can manage. We agree anything new with you and your landlord first. Where consent might be needed, check with the council’s conservation team before work starts: we’re IT people, not planning advisers. How we approach networks and Wi-Fi.

Local support

Business help in Bath & North East Somerset

The council’s Invest in B&NES service points businesses to start-up guidance, grants and other finance, links with university research and a network of support partners, and its business engagement team is on invest@bathnes.gov.uk.

For one-to-one advice, the West of England Growth Hub gives free, impartial support across the area. Businesses in Bath & North East Somerset and South Gloucestershire can also get up to 12 hours of free support from Cool Ventures, which is listed on GOV.UK.

None of that replaces IT support, but it’s worth using before you spend. If a move, a new system or a hardware refresh is on the way, get the business case straight first, then ask us for a fixed quote.

Co-managed IT

Keep your IT person, add a team behind them

If you have someone in-house who looks after IT, perhaps alongside another role, co-managed IT can be the best of both for a business an hour and a quarter from us. They stay in charge and stay the hands on site. We provide the tools, the cover and the second line.

  • Helpdesk overflow when they’re busy, in a meeting or away
  • The monitoring, backup checks and security tools we use for our managed clients
  • Holiday and sickness cover, with access agreed in advance
  • Extra hands for projects such as migrations and moves
  • A second opinion when something looks like a security problem

We agree in writing who does what, so nothing falls between the two teams. See co-managed IT.

Is it a fit?

Who we suit, and who we don’t

If you need an engineer in your office at short notice every week, or you rely on equipment that often needs physical attention, a provider based in or near Bath will serve you better. We’d rather say that now than disappoint you later.

We work best for Bath teams whose work lives in the cloud and on laptops, who want their security done properly and would rather deal with a few people who know them than a large helpdesk that doesn’t.

Moving from your current provider is usually one email on your side; the free assessment, the plan and the handover are on ours. See how switching works. Before you sign, you get a fixed quote that spells out what’s covered, including how visits to Bath work, and the agreement starts with a no-obligation review period.

Questions

IT support in Bath: FAQs

How do you handle a problem that needs someone on site in Bath?

Most problems are fixed remotely, often without you needing to do anything. If something physically needs an engineer, we arrange a visit and tell you honestly when we can be there, allowing for a drive of about an hour and a quarter. Planned work, such as installing equipment, is booked in advance.

Do we need permission to run new network cables in a listed building?

Possibly. Alterations that would affect a listed building’s character need listed building consent, and that can include internal work. Check with your landlord and the council’s conservation team before anything is fixed to the walls. We plan around existing cable routes and wireless coverage to keep new work to a minimum.

Do all our online apps need multi-factor authentication for Cyber Essentials?

Yes, every cloud service your business uses that offers it, even when switching it on means paying for an add-on. Cloud services can’t be left out of scope under the current requirements, so we find them all first and fix any gaps before the assessment.

Can you support our in-house IT person rather than replace them?

Yes. Your IT person keeps the lead, and we become the team behind them for the busy days, the holidays, the projects and the security tooling. For a business in Bath, that means someone on site who knows the office and a team in Cardiff they can call on.
