IT Support in Pontypridd

Managed IT support for Pontypridd businesses, with your data protected off site and a plan for the day the office is out of action.

Pontypridd

Managed IT for Pontypridd and Rhondda Cynon Taf

Yes, we offer managed IT support to Pontypridd businesses. Alphabyte IT is based in east Cardiff, around ten miles from the town centre, so it’s a drive of about 20 minutes on the A470 when the road is quiet. Our support costs a fixed fee per user each month, from £40 + VAT, and covers unlimited help by phone, remotely and onsite. Anything urgent is typically picked up straight away under our SLA.

Most problems never need a visit. Accounts, Microsoft 365, software, updates and backups are all handled remotely, with nobody needing to travel. Network cabinets, Wi-Fi black spots, new equipment and anything that needs a screwdriver get an engineer in person, and Pontypridd is a short journey from our office. Onsite visits are part of the monthly fee.

This page also covers something specific to the town: how to protect your IT and your data from flooding, which reached the town centre in February 2020 and again in November 2024.

Close at hand

A short trip down the A470 when a fix needs an engineer in the room.

Off-site backups

Daily backups, monitored by our team and stored away from your building.

Work from anywhere

Secure laptops and Microsoft 365, so a closed office doesn’t close the business.

Security built in

Anti-virus, anti-spam and MFA on every account, and systems kept to the Cyber Essentials standard.

When the Taff rises

Two floods in five years

During Storm Dennis in February 2020, the River Taff at Pontypridd peaked at 5.32 metres, the highest level recorded at the monitoring station since it opened in 1970. Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s flood investigation found 78 non-residential properties flooded internally, mainly on Taff Street and Mill Street. At the time, the council’s recovery board heard that around three-quarters of the business units on Treforest Industrial Estate had been affected, and that losses across the area included stock, Wi-Fi and IT equipment.

In November 2024, Storm Bert flooded 39 non-residential properties in Pontypridd town centre. The council’s recovery board also heard in 2020 that many affected businesses had contents insurance but no loss-of-trade cover, so it’s worth checking your policy as well as your IT.

Computers can be replaced. What really hurts is losing the data on them, or being unable to work for weeks while the building dries out. Both are avoidable with some planning, and much of it is part of how we set up IT anyway. The same measures also protect you from the more everyday disasters: a failed hard drive, a stolen laptop or a ransomware attack. Backup and disaster recovery explained.

Your IT flood plan

Five steps that keep you working through it

Most of this is part of how we run IT for every client. The rest is worth doing if your premises are anywhere near the river.

Data off the premises

Files in Microsoft 365 or another cloud service, plus a daily backup we monitor. If the office floods, your data is somewhere dry.

Kit off the floor

Servers, network cabinets and routers raised well above ground level, or moved upstairs where the building allows.

Laptops, not towers

When staff can take their machine home, they can keep working, with multi-factor authentication on every account.

Phones that follow you

Calls that ring on mobiles and laptops, so customers can reach you while the building is closed.

A plan on paper

Who does what, where people work from and how to get systems back, agreed before you need it.

Council support

Help with the cost

At the time of writing, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Business Flood Resilience Grant can pay 100% of eligible costs, up to £10,000, for measures that make business premises more resilient to flooding. Its examples include raising power points and internal storage for stock and equipment, both directly relevant to where your IT lives. Priority goes to small and medium-sized businesses that can show they were affected by Storm Bert, and you need to be on the non-domestic rates register.

The grant won’t pay for anything bought before the offer date, so apply first and order afterwards. The details are on the council’s flood resilience grant page.

Phones and calls

Keep customers able to reach you

If your phone system lives in a cupboard on the ground floor, a flood can cut you off from customers at the moment they most need to reach you. Moving to a phone system that runs over the internet means calls can be answered from anywhere. We work alongside telecoms partners to set this up and keep it running. Business phone systems.

None of this is only about flooding. The same plan covers a fire, a burst pipe, a break-in or a power cut, and it’s part of what we look after anyway.

Shared premises

Sharing a building, not a network

Plenty of businesses around Pontypridd work from managed space. The Business Development Centre on Treforest Industrial Estate, for example, has 20 serviced offices and 18 industrial workshops. Shared buildings are convenient, but a shared internet connection or shared Wi-Fi can put your computers on the same network as other tenants’.

We give your team its own protected network inside the building, with a firewall we manage, so your files and devices aren’t visible to the business next door. A properly configured firewall is also one of the five controls that Cyber Essentials checks.

Switching provider

Changing IT provider, step by step

If you already have an IT provider and it isn’t working out, switching is usually a single email from you to your current supplier. We look over your systems at no cost, set out a plan and manage the handover from there. See how switching works.

Our clients are mainly professional firms, such as solicitors and accountants, along with engineering firms, estate agents and growing teams. We’ve been doing this since 2009, when Ross Owen set up the company after years in IT at large Cardiff law firms, and the team is on first-name terms with the people it supports.

Not sure how exposed you are? AlphaSec, our security brand, will check your email spoofing protection, website certificate and domain renewal using public records alone, and send you the results on one page. The security snapshot is free.

Questions

IT support in Pontypridd: FAQs

If our office floods, how soon can we be working again?

That depends on how you’re set up before it happens. With your data in the cloud, backups held off site, laptops staff can take home and phones that ring anywhere, most businesses can carry on from elsewhere while the building recovers. We’ll show you where your current set-up would leave you.

Can a flood resilience grant pay for changes to our IT?

Possibly. Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Business Flood Resilience Grant gives raising power points and internal storage for equipment as examples, and the council decides what qualifies. We can quote for the IT side, such as moving a server or network cabinet somewhere safer.

Which areas around Pontypridd can you cover?

All of Pontypridd and the surrounding area, including Treforest, Trallwn, Cilfynydd, Church Village, Llantrisant and the Rhondda and Cynon valleys, as well as Cardiff and the rest of South Wales.

We’re in a serviced office with Wi-Fi included. Do we need our own network?

Not always, but often. If the building’s Wi-Fi is shared with other tenants, your devices sit on the same network as theirs. For a small team, a separately secured network with its own firewall is usually a simple change that closes the gap. If what you have is fine, we’ll say so.
